Welcome to The Green House – Iowa City’s plant-themed cocktail lounge, designed to be your perfect third space for relaxation, connection, and botanical-inspired drinks. Nestled in the heart of the city, we offer a tranquil, greenery-filled environment for a unique cocktail experience.
Founded by University of Iowa alum and former FilmScene Director of Operations, Emily Salmonson, The Green House was created as a welcoming space for guests to unwind, enjoy local craft beverages, and experience the beauty of nature. With two outdoor patios, gardens, floor-to-ceiling windows, and lush interiors, we’re a true urban oasis.
Our “bar-tanists” craft specialty cocktails using local herbs, tinctures, and bitters for a signature botanical twist. We proudly feature a variety of Iowa craft beers, locally made ciders, and plant-themed beverages—both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Whether you’re in the mood for a spirit-forward cocktail or a refreshing non-alcoholic option, we have something for everyone.
Enjoy a peaceful retreat or gather with friends on our patios, surrounded by a growing collection of plants. Inside, cozy nooks provide the perfect backdrop for intimate conversations, while our Area 51-inspired space—featuring a preserved moss wall and vibrant orchids—adds a playful touch to your experience.

At The Green House, we take pride in being your third spot—a welcoming, relaxed space that’s neither home nor work but a place where you can unwind, connect, and recharge. Our goal is to offer an inviting atmosphere where people from all walks of life can come together, surrounded by lush greenery and good vibes.
Whether you’re stopping by for a quiet moment with a botanical cocktail, meeting up with friends, attending a community event or hosting your own, we strive to be your go-to spot for meaningful interactions. There are no distractions like TVs here—just real conversations, nature-inspired drinks, and a cozy environment that encourages connection and creativity. Come experience the unique blend of plants, friends, and spirits that make The Green House a perfect third place in our community.

At The Green House, we host a variety of engaging community events that bring people together in a cozy, plant-filled setting:
- Pop-Up Game Nights
- First Wednesday: Open Game Night – A casual board game night with snacks and drinks.
- Third Wednesday: Theme Night – Shake things up with themed games, blind date games, and player mix-ups.
- Death Café: Held on the last Tuesday of each month. An informal gathering to discuss life and death, guided by facilitators but shaped by attendees. Enjoy snacks and drinks while engaging in thoughtful conversation.
- Collaborative Workshops: We regularly partner with local businesses for unique events. We’re always open to new partnerships, so you can expect more fun collaborations in the future!

Rental Spaces
The Green House also offers a beautiful side room for private events, perfect for gatherings like baby showers, wedding showers, birthdays, knitting circles, and more. If your group needs a little extra space, our Green Room can be rented out for up to 40 guests, making it an ideal spot for everything from book clubs to Dungeons & Dragons nights or private dinner parties.
For all other seating, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, but larger parties are welcome to call ahead for assistance in making accommodations. Whether you’re looking to host an intimate get-together or a larger celebration, The Green House provides a serene, inviting space for your next event.
